Description

What is rabies?

Rabies is an infection that is transmitted to humans through a bite or scratch from a dog, bat, raccoon or fox infected with the disease. The rabies virus is extremely rare in the UK, and it’s not likely that you will contract it during travel. However, it is found more frequently in areas around Asia, Africa, Central and South America. If a human contracts the disease, it is usually fatal if not treated immediately, but can be prevented by the recommended course of rabies vaccination for humans.

How long before travel should I get a rabies vaccine?
Our clinic here in Oldham, Greater Manchester, recommends receiving the rabies vaccination at least one month before your trip. It consists of three doses, given within a 3-4 week period. If you need to travel sooner, we can discuss the option of taking the doses quicker.

What are the side effects of rabies vaccine?
It is rare to experience side effects after the rabies virus vaccine, but if you do experience symptoms, they will be mild, and won’t last long. Rabies vaccination side effects can include:
– Redness or mild pain in the area of the injection
– A headache
– A slight fever
– Nausea and vomiting
– An itchy hive on the skin

How long does a rabies virus vaccine for humans last?
Though it can vary from person to person, the human rabies vaccination normally gives protection for between one and two years. If a person is at long term risk, a booster can be given to ensure continued protection. Our clinic near Rochdale provides this.

Who does Rabies Affect?
Anyone can get rabies, but it is more common for children. This is because they are more likely to get bitten and are not as likely as adults to tell someone.
